Map 19: Petaluma River To Hudeman Slough· Saturday, March 12, 2022
Start/End: Black Point Boat Launch ($5 parking)
Notes: The Petaluma river stands as a major obstacle in navigating the way around the north bay. The Proposed Bay Trail is indicated as going along Hwy 37 and crossing the bridge. I'm not sure how this will ever happen unless the bridge is completely rebuilt one day. There's almost no room on it for humans and cars are moving at freeway speeds. (Note: Some people have crossed it on foot though, so it remains an option...)
We've been pondering this for a while and decided we'd paddle across it. It's about a 1/4 mile across, so not that far. We waited for an early morning high tide (and no small craft advisory!) and then paddled our inflatable Kayak "Saga" to the other side. We were able to pull into where the Official Bay Trail continues, get out, take a couple of pictures then re-board our craft all without falling into the slough mud.
Having bridged the gap with human power, we then explored the abandoned marina, mostly inhabited by birds now, and then paddled around the train bridge before returning to the boat launch.
